The Importance of Being Sexual: A History of Sexuality Sex is the force that drives the continuation of humanity, and sexuality is an integral part of human life. Next to survival, the most primitive primal human instinct is sex. Sexuality is something carnal and pervasive, something that is responsible for and touches the lives of everyone. Understanding its history, its relativity to culture and era, and its fluidity of meaning is vital to gaining and composing a full understanding of the behaviors of humankind. To understand the history of sexuality is to contextualize modern struggles. It validates current sexual identities in ways that may be in contrast to modern cultural notions, and can even give inspiration and motivation to today s LGBT youth. The history of sexuality can be surprising and more complex than expected, sometimes revealing dark pasts that would rather be left forgotten. It opens doors of thought and broadens perspectives, leading people to analyze and questio n sexual norms and other forms of social control that sometimes cause more harm than good.
