Ping Sweep and Port Scans Essay Information system threats are central to developments in information systems and should be viewed positively. Introduction The emergence of computers effectively led to a change in the approach to business operations. Information technology led to the development of a completely different approach to operations and is cited as a key driver to globalization which is central to the high level of competition being experienced in different industries. High levels of competition have led to an increase in the need for security since information is central to identification of opportunities and development of innovative approaches to operation. The internet as an information superhighway is especially laced with all kinds of security threats. Protocols are continuously being developed to try and ensure high levels of security; however the threats have managed to stay abreast due to the diversity they exhibit. Ping Sweep There are different modes used by an attacker to gain and interfere with the operations of a system. However, most attacks require a system to be active and therefore implement a mechanism to detect the activity of a system. Ping is one such technique that has found use in by both black and white hat hackers. The first step in the hackers’ manual is to determine the activity of a network and its connection status to the internet after which codes are subjected to the system to try and gain its control (Kurtz, McClure, Scambray, 2005). The actual mechanism involved in ping operations includes sending network packets and awaiting some unique response that will show the activity of the system. To effectively attack a network an attacker must gather as much information as possible; this is done by a ping sweep (Kurtz et al, 2005). A number of ping operations are done and each targeted at a specific IP address (Kurtz et al, 2005). To be effective in remote information collection, multithreaded sweep tools that allow for customized time-outs (Kurtz et al, 2005). Port Scanning The threats posed by ping operations are known to all administrators who often developed mechanisms to ensure that their security is not compromised. Open hosts are a key security threat and can be used by attackers to deal a deathly blow to systems (Scambray, McClure, 2007). Port scanning as a system maintenance mechanism is mainly concerned with searching network hosts to determine which ports are open. Administrators and crackers use port scanners which are software component to determine states of networks thus their vulnerability. Scanning can take on different approaches which include TCP, UDP or SYN scanning (Scambray, McClure, 2007). It is worth noting that the objective of the scanner determines the effects that the scanning activity will have on the network or system. A port scanning mechanism where multiple hosts are scanned to determine the one that is listening is referred to as a port sweep (Scambray, McClure, 2007). Implication Port scanning and ping sweeps can be dangerous depending on the objectives of the person or entity initiating them. They can be considered system threats or maintenance procedures depending on whether they are being initiated by a hacker or a system analyst. There are several approaches that have been developed to minimize the risk of malicious ping sweeps against a network. Disabling ICMP protocols for networks connected directly to the internet and configurations of firewalls to do the same is effective in dealing with ping sweeps (Kurtz et al, 2005). Port scanning is used to gather information on a networks security which can then be used to cause malfunctions such as buffer overflows. Conclusion Port scans and ping sweeps can be used by administrators and hackers and are thus both beneficial and risk causing. Managers should ensure that their systems are developed in a manner that is security conscious in that even if it is scanned no security weakness should be discovered. Dealing with the threat of port scan can cause inefficiencies though ping sweeps can be dealt with effectively. Developing a robust network that is near perfect is the ultimate approach to dealing with the threats posed by ping seeps and port scans which are just information seeking mechanisms. Being aware that versatile and creative hackers are in a position to scan a system is motivation enough to ensure system security is kept up to date with development in information technology. Thus, scanners and sweepers are motivators behind the development and improvements in information strategies aimed at development of secure information systems. The Character Alfieri in Arthur Millers Play, A View From the Bridge E

Arthur Miller, in his play A View from the Bridge, gives a different perspective of the story by focusing on the character Alfieri who makes the audience understand the real side of the play. Alfieri is a well educated lawyer who follows and respects the American law, but is still loyal to Italian ethnicity. In A View from the Bridge Alfieri is equivalent to the chorus in a Greek tragedy, meaning he introduces the play and narrates the story in flashback. He explains the events on the stage to the audience without actually participating. He opens the play with a very revealing account of how life used to be and how life is presently in America in the Italian community. He goes into graphic detail about the past murders: â€Å"†¦ and Frankie Yale himself was cut precisely in half by a machine gun on the corner of Union Street, two blocks away† (Act I pg 4). This creates a vivid mental picture and therefore creates the ideal environment for tragedy. In order to strengthen this point Alfieri states that lawyers in ancient times as well present times, were unable to prevent â€Å"complaint† running a â€Å"bloody course†, this causes us to issue the power and influence of law. In other words, justice is very essential but by law justice is not always delivered. Alfieri strongly believes that it is best to â€Å"settle for half†; this means that it is better to rely on written law and accept it even if you are half satisfied. It is better to follow the law rather taking it in your own hands. In the play we can see that Eddie Carbone betrays Marco and Rodolpho by calling the Immigration Bureau, this is ironic as Eddie is obeying the American law but not the Italian ‘law of honor’. Now there is no law to punish Eddie and as a consequence Marco takes th... ...ieri as a character and a narrator was successful in giving a twist of suspense in this play. The message conveyed through Alfieri is that we should judge with our heads, unlike Eddie whose actions are performed sentimentally. If we use our mind then the troubles that are attached to us will repel and if we give feelings to our action then more problems will be attracted to your life. Our behavior and actions cannot always depend on our feelings, although sometimes we need to take our sentiments into consideration and see how it will affect other people and the environment. If we use our mind, we can achieve the goal, but we need to take feelings along it. In every way we should always concretize our dreams and needs with feelings, but not very emotionally. John Harricharan truly said â€Å"Peace is not achieved by controlling nations, but mastering our thoughts.†

The Epic Of Beowulf, By An Anonymous Anglo Saxon Poet

In the epic of Beowulf, written by an anonymous Anglo Saxon poet, there are three women that have pivotal roles, Wealhtheow, Grendel’s Mother and Hildeburth. Throughout the epic, we see each of these women characters play specific roles that are important to the society they are living in. The epic would not be the same if each woman didn’t play their significant part. Each woman plays an important role either in the mead hall, in the home or in battle. Each of these woman makes for a successful storyline that goes together flawlessly and makes for a poem that has been read for centuries and will continue to be read in years to come. Wealhtheow is the Queen of the Spear-Danes and wife of King Hrothgar. She only appears for a short time in the story, but when she does she is in charge of carrying a goblet of mead around for the warriors to eat. When her husband passes away, she is nervous about the fate of the Danish Kingdom. She makes a long speech directed towards Beow ulf that she needs to defend her son’s rights to the throne. Beowulf shows his heroic and humble quality here by not taking the throne himself and giving it to who is next in line. Grendel’s mother, who is only referred to as this, is known to be just as massive and monster like as her son. Throughout the story she is trying to protect her son against death and in doing so she attacks Heorot Hall.
